The land records of Kentucky show that in 1783 he was deputy surveyor in Fayette Co. for a grant to Philip Grymes, in the laying out of which John Grymes was chainman, Henry Payne was end-marker, and Thomas Marshall was surveyor. It thus appears that men went out from Virginia to Kentucky to survey their land, or their friend's land, before emigrating to occupy it.
