Her husband, William Love, died soon after mariage and a month later she delivered of a dead child. In a period of nine months and at the age of sixteen, she was a maiden, a bride, a widow and a mother.

General Shipp commanded the Corps of Cadets of the Virginia Military Institute at the battle of Hay Market, and was later Superintendent of the Institute.
