Chief Justice of the Supreme Court
He served in the Navy during World War II from December 7, 1939 to December 12, 1945. His rank was Chief Radioman. Navy Press release notes that he served in a group called SACO (Sino American Co-operative Organization) which was a group of Navy guerillas, intelligence agents and weather observers behind Japanese lines. He set up radio communications. He was also stationed aboard the
U.S. Quincy which was sunk by the Japanese. At that time he was in radar school at Norfolk, VA from which he received his C.R.M. rating.
